State Axes Virtual Charter Funding

MUNCIE — Ball State University is reviewing its sponsorship of the state’s first virtual charter schools after the Indiana General Assembly denied it $21 million in funding for the initiative.

Kimb Stewart, charter school consultant for the state’s education department, said a privately funded charter could operate in Indiana but, without public funding, would not be recognized as a public school.

“Things just fell apart over the weekend, and we really don’t know what happened,” Eby said.
Dan Clark, deputy director of the Indiana State Teachers Association, said it “didn’t make much sense” for the state to fund virtual charter schools when it couldn’t financially support key agenda items like full-day kindergarten or student remediation.

“We’re not going to just let this die,” she said. “We’ll come back fighting even harder in two years and they’ll see how committed we are to this.”

Clark said he’s spoken to family members with children enrolled at the virtual schools and discussed with them the option of a virtual public cooperative school.
