Paige, whose mom describes her as a “visual learner,” had difficulty adjusting to the traditional school setting. Now she’s also a virtual learner — this fall she enrolled in an online school out of the Appleton Area School District instead of Baraboo’s Jack Young Middle School — and so far, she’s thriving.
The Wisconsin Connections Academy, now in its fifth year, is a free public school accepting children in kindergarten through eighth grade who participate in online learning guided by certified teachers. Each child has a “learning coach,” usually a parent, who supervises lesson plans and learning on the homefront.

“Her teacher last year expressed a lot of concern about her going to middle school and getting left behind,” Christy said. Extensive research convinced her Wisconsin Connections could offer Paige the tailored learning she needed, Christy said. “They don’t even consider this homeschooling. It’s public schooling that’s a virtual school… There’s a lot of accountability.”

And that’s one good reason why we don’t want psing-at-home to be viewed as homeschooling. Lots of accountability isn’t equal to an educated child. Lots of accountability is the requirement for the taxpayers’ investment.
